HUD Tag & Wind Zone: Why Your Premium Depends on a Sticker

Every HUD-code manufactured home has a small red metal certification tag mounted on the exterior — usually on the back of the home near the bottom. There may be more than one (one per section).

What the tag tells underwriters

  • When and where the home was built (plant location, date).
  • Which HUD-code version applied at the time.
  • The wind zone the home was rated for: I, II, or III.

Why wind zone matters

Wind Zone I is the entire interior US. Wind Zone II is most of the Gulf and Atlantic coastal counties. Wind Zone III is the immediate hurricane coastline. If you live in Zone III but your home was built for Zone I, carriers will either decline or charge a serious surcharge. If your home was built for the zone you live in, you’re in great shape.

Lost the tag? Many states’ manufactured-housing divisions can pull the data label info from the serial number.
