Tie-Downs and Skirting: Discounts You’re Probably Missing
Two of the cheapest physical upgrades you can make to a mobile home also unlock the biggest insurance discounts.
Tie-downs (anchors)
Steel straps from the chassis to ground anchors that resist wind uplift. Required by most carriers in wind-exposed states; voluntary elsewhere — but installing them anyway can earn 10–20% off premium in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Carolinas.
Skirting
The wall of vinyl, metal, or block enclosing the area under your home. Beyond looking nicer, skirting cuts wind exposure under the home, keeps pipes from freezing, and improves rodent-proofing. Many carriers require it for a full-coverage quote.
What it costs vs what it saves
A professional tie-down install runs $400–$1,200 depending on home size and soil. Vinyl skirting kits are $500–$1,500. If you save 15% on a $1,000 premium, you recoup the cost in two to three years — and you’re materially safer in a storm.
